On public roads, with other people.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

They almost didn’t buy new tires when the service writer brought it to their attention (it was originally in for an oil change and nothing else) after I showed him pictures of the tires because they claimed they couldn’t afford the Michelins that were on the car. Which I understand, but even some cheapo Chinese tires would’ve been acceptable in this case. They ended up getting some Continentals, which weren’t exactly cheap.

The worst part of this being there was a child seat in the back.

Wow, just wow. I’ve seen some similar to that, but more along the lines of steel belt showing. No bueno. One reason I would support mandatory safety inspections for vehicles is this right here. We have nothing here in Michigan.

We have mandatory safety inspections here in Missouri that are required every time the plates need renewing, so every year or two years. Yet this is still on the road.

I was waiting at a tech station for my car. It needed a yearly check up, like most of the cars there. There was an SUV getting its yearly check up as well. The SUV finished up earlier then my car did, but it didnt pass however. The tech that checked it walked up to the waiting area and called for the owner of the SUV. A young woman stood up and walked together with the tech to her car. I could hear them argue, he tried to explain to her that her tires were shot and she needed new ones (same story with the child seat in the back), she kept yelling at him that he was just trying to make her pay more. Even after the dude told her she didnt have to buy and install the tires at that particular tech station, she still refused. The car had one more month until the check up date expired (MOT-like check up) so she took the car and drove off. Crazy.

I would suspect something isn’t working then, but then again you can tear up a set of tires pretty quickly.

You would really think people would care a little bit more about the sole thing between their cars and the road.

I’m personally still trying to figure out how the tires got tore up like they did. It was a 2011 LaCrosse with 50k miles driven by a little old lady. It first it seemed like the alignment was WAAAAAAY bad but once the new tires were on the alignment was fine.

Under inflation looks like it could be the culprit. That will super trash a tire.

I dont think they often realize how important tires are....

repeatedly cycling between under and over inflated will definitely do that to a tire......

I drive a ton and am fortunate to be in a position now in life to where a set of tires wont bring financial ruin. In college I would go to the wear bars and then get new ones. One time while driving on a 65 mph road the light turned yellow and it was raining. I just touched the brakes and the wheels locked up immediately. Drive carefully home and got tires first thing the next morning. Now I get tires where most people would consider having a good bit of life left in them.

Looks like tires after the drive on the roads that don’t get repaved but get tarred and gravel thrown on top

Now that you say that, I feel like there’s definitely subaru wheels that look similar to that.

By all means, let’s stop having state inspections.

We used to have safely inspections in Georgia but they were deemed racist and eliminated.

I lived in Maine they have them there. There were less death traps on the road up there.

You’re probably thinking of these off of the 06-08 Forester.

It used to be not a big deal, the winters up here would sideline all kinds of hoopties so cause they just couldn’t run. That’s how you could tell it was spring. All the shitboxes that wouldn’t start for the past 4 months would finally run. Now though, even the most neglected car will still run year round.

I think the date code on them was 2011. The rears were the same age and were just fine.
